Summer Activities

Hiking and Biking: The hiking and mountain biking opportunities in Big Sky abound, and you will find something for every level of ability and preference in and around Big Sky. Trails also sprout in all directions from Highway 191 in the Gallatin National Forest between Big Sky, Bozeman, and the Yellowstone Park boundary just 18 miles south. Some hikes you shouldn't miss: Lava Lake, Beehive Basin, Storm Castle, Ousel Falls.

Whitewater rafting and kayaking: The Gallatin is popular with whitewater enthusiasts and is considered a challenge by some, and a place of serenity by others. The 20 mile stretch between Big Sky and the northern mouth of the canyon is particularly wild, but there are plenty of stretches that offer day floats as well.

Golfing: Big Sky is home to an 18-hole, par-72 Arnold Palmer designed golf course that lies beneath the backdrop of Lone Mountain. The course is open to the public, with holes harbored creek side, some nestled in the trees, and some in the great wide open. It also offers and excellent opportunity to spot moose and see Lone Peak from a variety of vantage points.

Fly fishing: Fly fish the blue-ribbon Gallatin. The Gallatin River offers easy fishing access via pullouts along most of the river's 90 miles. The Gallatin River offers some of Montana's finest freestone fly fishing for wild Browns, Rainbows and Cutthroats. The legendary salmon fly hatch takes place in late June through early July and the fishing is superlative.

Ride the Zipline: Big Sky's Zipline offers three exhilarating cables that will whisk you from ridge line to ridgeline across great scenic expanses for the ride of your life.

Horseback riding: Big Sky offers several different horseback riding outfitters to choose from who offer horseback rides through an endless number of trails in the Gallatin Nation Forest. Ride from an hour to a full day under Montana's "Big Sky" country.
